Indian Ridge, Brookfield
An Indian Ridge home owned by a lively and active couple had seen decades of life, love and laughter. Baking, gardening, tennis, dancing and classic care restoration are some of the activities that fill the days of these fabulous now great-grandparents. The addition of a fourth generation prompted them to look to their home and how it could accommodate such a growing family for visits and holidays.
This home is surrounded by lush, well-tended gardens but smaller windows and the sectioned-off nature of the first floor limited the views from inside the home. A new patio door, transom windows, and expanded window and door openings now frame views of the gardens and allow sunlight to flood the kitchen and living room. A large load bearing wall between the two rooms was removed, and the addition of a passage between the living room and the piano room allow easy movement around the entire first floor.
In the kitchen, clean, white cabinetry and granite counter-tops provide attractive prep spaces, while a large, functional island with seating compliments the kitchen and engages guests. Complimentary display cabinetry was added and a pantry, additional counter space, and utility closets were relocated to a more natural layout. A mix of can lighting, task lighting, and hanging pendants illuminate the space. Custom storage was created for spices, baking supplies, and even the family dog’s food and toys.
In the family room, dark wood built-in cabinets surrounding the fireplace were removed and replaced with glass cabinetry matching the kitchen. New hardwood flooring throughout the first floor is a subtle and hard-wearing attractive addition to the home. The powder room was updated with new utilities and hardware which complimented existing vintage touches. An underutilized dining room became a new home office with custom-built cabinetry to the homeowner’s specification. New energy-efficient front doors complete the space and usher in all visitors to this warm and welcoming home.
